The Divisions of Biochemistry (Department of Neuroscience) at the Carl von Ossietzky University Oldenburg offers

in the research project "Cryptochromes as molecular triggers in magnetoreceptive cell responses”. The position is supposed to start in January 2023 and should lead to a successful dissertation. The project is part of the DFG funded SFB 1372 “Magnetoreception and navigation in vertebrates: from biophysics to brain and behaviour”.

The overall aim of the project is to identify the first step(s) in the signal transduction cascade connecting the radical-pair reaction in cryptochromes to downstream signaling steps. In particular we aim at identifying the target proteins and binding partners of cryptochromes. Our studies also aim at characterizing the trigger events in cryptochrome proteins by determining the conformational changes initiating the signalling cascade. Functional approaches will be complemented by interaction analysis using biochemical and biophysical techniques. 

We expect a successful applicant to have completed a scientific university degree (Diplom (Uni) / Master) in biology, chemistry, biochemistry or related subjects and a strong interest in basic research in a collaborative research environment. We require very good mastering of English reading and writing. Our groups are located at the Carl von Ossietzky University, Germany, and are part of several collaborative centres of excellence including the Research Training Group (RTG) “Molecular Basis of Sensory Biology” and the Collaborative Research Center SFB1372 “Magnetoreception and navigation in vertebrates” (s. above). These collaborations will give you access to a very wide range of superb modern equipment, techniques and expertise.
